"Before we can be intimate with other people, we need to be comfortable being intimate with ourselves." 


When I discovered that self-compassion is wiser (and much harder!) than ego abandonment, it was a rude awakening, because I had to let go of spiritual practices that simply taught neutrality towards/ de-realization of "the one who suffers."
